Credit Card Fraud - How it may affect your website

Anyone with real sales with their e-commerce website will eventually have a day where a hacker/thief is attempting to buy goods on your website with a stolen credit card.

There could be hundreds and even thousands of attempts.

Your mailbox fills up with declined card notifications.

Your annoyed and distracted all day.

You may even receive a call from your credit card company to discuss this suspicious activity.

Finally you will contact one of us here at Website Forge and ask for it all to stop.

Something like "Can you block this person from attempting to charge this card over and over?"

And here is the answer:

IF the person is making these attempts from the SAME IP address -- YES.

However if they are using many IP addresses, which are usually spoofed, then - NO.

Not without risking blocking actual good customers that might buy. And this is usually the case.

See. IP addresses are generally "Static" or never change on a server or web site. However, IP addresses are generally reused and change often on the consumer side.

The IP address is a unique number used to identify the machine.

Since your customers are intiating the visit to your web site -- their IP address only needs to be the same for that session. Not always.

So if you start blocking all sorts of IP addresses -- you just risk blocking valid users from your store.

What other effects can this have?

Well I know of a customer that had his PayPal account locked out because of too many fraudulent attempts. Not his fault. They locked him out anyways.

I received a call at 7am on a Sunday. And we mitigated his situation. He wasn't very happy at all with PayPal.

SIDENOTE: This is one of the many reasons PayPal is not the best credit card processing solution.

Some customers are later called by the FBI to help figure out who was doing this. Because you weren't the only one getting hammered.

Bottom line: If this happens to you. You are on the map! Yes this means you are somebody :)

Because it seems just as you become successful with sales this type of issue happens at least once.

So I look forward to your call. Now that you know a bit more about it -- you can relax and we work on it together.

Hello everyone! Been a while since I blogged.

We have started rebuilding our video library from scratch at http://videos.websiteforge.com

You can also subscribe to our YOUTUBE channel at https://youtube.com/websiteforge

Our goal is to add roughly 20-40 vidoes per month. They should cover basics up to the more complex features!

Take a look at a few play lists on our YouTube channel:

Google Checkout now available.... For those of you who have asked and asked and asked.... It's now here.

Some people have read or been told that using Google Checkout on their site shall increase search engine results.

Our research so far has not given us any real indication of that. Also keep in mind that Google Checkout has "terms" that might exclude your site from using it. So make sure you follow all the rules stated.

Also remember, as far as I know, Google isn't a bank. I will include a snippet that will clarify my point:

"Despite all the media attention surrounding alternative payment systems like Google Checkout™, traditional credit card transactions remain the most popular choice among customers for online purchases. According to a recent survey, only 44% of PayPal™ customers and 19% of Google Checkout customers rate their purchase experience as good or very good.*

Alternative payment systems create a middleman between you and your customers, which may hurt your business and confuse your customers. Accepting traditional credit card payments is critical to building a successful business, and all you need is a merchant account and a payment gateway account."

Please provide any feedback you can on Google Checkout -- so that we can share with all our Website Forge community.

NEED CUSTOM PROGRAMMING ADDED TO YOUR SITE?

I recently received some feedback that sparked this headline. Website Forge is designed to handle the vast majority of web site and e-commerce needs.

In fact, we find that Website Forge is a fit for about 80% of the business models out there.

- A look at Dabble DB -- A great new web idea

Unprecedented FULL 12 Month Guarantee on Website Forge web sites!

Website Forge has long been the ONLY company to provide a real 30 day money back guarantee.

The only company to survey their customers every 7 days during their project development.

The only company to provide unlimited pages, products, and bandwith in a CUSTOM DESIGNED web site. The only company that includes hundreds of thousands of dollars of improvements to it's clients every single year....

Once again we have gone over the top.

We are so sure you will love your Website Forge web site we will back it up with a 12 month guarantee. That's right. If after ONE FULL YEAR you don't love your web site -- we will refund your entire purchase price!

No other web site company has the confidence in their company to offer such an amazing guarantee on their custom web site solutions... NOBODY!

Customer Service at it's Best!

I received a call Friday night from Dale Spenrath (CEO of www.posprocessing.com) around 7:00 PM asking me if Website Forge was having any techincal issues.

I told him I was unaware of any problems. Dale was already on the phone with the technical guys at Linkpoint to see why our mutual customer had called him with a card processing problem.

I hung up and a few minutes later Dale called me back on my cell phone and informed me that Linkpoint did, in fact, have some temporary problems and it would be resolved in a couple hours. I was able to notify our clients so they could be aware of this issue.

When was the last time Henry Ford and Good Year's CEO called each other to work out a technical detail for their car owners? I just call that "Customer Service at it's Best!".

Take full advantage of your SEO technology

I make it a point to run our clients through a few questions to make sure they are doing all they can to promote their online business.

1. Have you enabled your "Google Sitemaps" feature in your web site yet?

2. Have you exported your products (if any) to Google Base? (formerly called Froogle)?

3. Have you spent time every day/week/month to improve your site copy with keyword rich content?

4. Have you considered rewriting your product descriptions to help prospective customers make the decision to purchase your product?

If you have answered NO to any of these questions.. Please reply here and we will have our team give you some specific actions so that you can get the most out of your web site...

Google struggles with SAAS solutions

I am a freshbooks.com customer and I ran across a couple good articles. Recenly they posted a message about Google and some problems they have had supporting their SAAS (Software As A Service) products. You will find the article interesting.

Hello WebsiteForge community!

There are a couple nice upgrades recently added to WebsiteForge.com

First we have added Product Ratings and Product Reviews! Take a look at http://www.thehomefurnishingsstore.com/m8_view_item.html?m8:item=1651 and try adding a review. You can also see the product popularity within your web site member's area.

Contact support for help with this new feature.

Fuzzy SKU search option is enabled by default for any Search Box frame. "Fuzzy search" means that the system tries to match incorrectly entered SKU numbers. It ignores separators (dashes, spaces etc.) and does not differentiate between "O" and zero.

This "Fuzzy Search" may allow people to find products when your customers do not type the EXACT sku or product number -- increasing the number of successful searches.

I also recently decided to setup a Twitter url for WebsiteForge.com. I'll let you know if I notice any marketing value. If you are on twitter.com, follow us at www.twitter.com/websiteforge and we will post twitter updates regularly.

Hello Website Forge partners.. Here are a couple imporant things you need to be aware of...

1. HIGH NUMBERS OF DECLINED SALES?

Some of you experienced unexplained declined sales on your web site. At the time we verified that the Website Forge system was working properly. We have more information that specifies what happened. You can read about the CitiBank system issue here: http://www.websiteforge.com/custom/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=2445#2445

2. PAYPAL EMAIL REGARDING EMAILS?

Paypal sent out a message saying they would reduce the number of email notifications they send. This will not affect any Website Forge customer. The website forge system already sends out emails to confirm orders, etc. So there will just be less redundancy.

Extra Feature: YOU LOVE TO PLAY POKER ONLINE?

Please check out a new web site I just launched. It's a Pre-Flop poker calculator.

It's a great way to learn how to play Poker and figure out your odds. I'm offering you a $10.00 off discount if you would like to take advantage of it. http://www.preflopadvantage.com (Use coupon code 99013 to get the $10.00 discount)

Important Credit Card Fraud Information - Website Forge - Shane Merem

I'm writing this message because I feel it's very important that our community of online e-commerce retailers understand how fraud impacts your business.

Kevin from www.diveprodivegear.com has a horrific story that started with $28,000 of fraudulent orders. The end result was a frozen credit card account and over $7,000 of HIS LEGITIMATE money held by Visa and Mastercard.

Keep in mind that Kevin identified and refunded this money thinking he was doing the "right thing".

** IMPORTANT NOTE **

Kevin mentions Linkpoint many times in this story. Keep in mind that Linkpoint is merely a gateway and does not make these decisions. The decisions are made by the actual processing bank -- in this case "First Data Corp.". Which, in turn is regulated by Visa/Mastercard, etc. So "Linkpoint" is only the gateway that happens to be the company handling the complaint.

I'll post Kevin's messages verbatim since he does a good job of telling his story...

Shane -- thanks very much for your prompt return of my call on Friday. I really appreciate it. Here's what happened ...

Over the last couple of months, we had 4 fraudulent orders get through the automatic Linkpoint authorization process and show up as new orders. These were large ($5000 - $11,000) orders and were suspect to us, so we called the credit card company, confirmed the credit card was stolen, cancelled the orders and processed credits to the cardholders. So far, so good.

Then our Amex orders started getting declined and shortly thereafter all our orders. Without notification, Amex's computer had decided that we were high risk and had suspended our account. That triggered Linkpoint into doing the same (again without notification). All this after 1) Amex approved the fraudulent transactions before we ever saw the orders and 2) in spite of the fact that we notified Amex of the fraud and promptly processed credits to the cardholders. Since last Friday, we have had to process orders manually and hold transactions while I sort things out with Amex and Linkpoint.

Amex has reinstated our account, and Linkpoint says they will within the next few days, but they aren't terribly responsive.

In any event, have you had website clients experience this before and, of so, what were they able to do to prevent re-occurance ?? For example, do they automatically decline any orders where the Bill To and Ship To don't match, then process those manually ??

Any advice is welcome. Thanks for listening -- KOB.

Hi Shane,

Here are the details ...

If you look on our website details, you will see the following orders:
#70600482 5/10/08 $7K+ Visa
#70600434 4/23/08 $5K+ Amex
#70600380 3/27/08 $10K+ Amex
#70600303 2/13/08 $6K+ Mastercard

Each of these orders was processed via Linkpoint and authorized prior to them being forward to us. Because of the large $ value, odd nature of the purchases (e.g. 20 of the same dive computer) and foreign Ship To address, we suspected that they were fraudulent and contacted the credit card company. When we confirmed that the credit cards were stolen, we cancelled the orders. Because the transactions had been approved by either the issuing bank or Amex, the funds had been automatically transferred to our bank account, so we also had to issue credits to the cardholders.

All of the above seemed to be "doing the right thing" and the credit card companies seemed to appreciate our efforts. We have not had a single bad transaction process to completion since opening in June 2007. And each of the Amex investigations was settled in our favor. There were no investigations for the Visa or MC transactions.

Nonetheless, last Tuesday 6/10, our Amex transactions started getting declined. At first, we thought that the customers were entering some incorrect information. However, just by coincidence, I had called Linkpoint and Amex and requested that they reimburse us for approx. $500+ each in credit card processing fees that they had charged us for the fraudulent transactions. Seems fair, doesn't it ?? They approve a transaction and charge us BIG fees, then we discover it's bad, refund the full amount and are out the fees. In this case, these 4 orders were more than $1000 in credit card processing fees.

So, when I spoke with Amex about these fees, they told us our account had been terminated, due to high risk. That is the ONLY notification that I have received to date. And I subsequently found out that the decision to terminate was made by a computer !! OK, I was pissed off and removed Amex from our website, but felt that was not the end of the earth because most orders are not Amex and most people have another credit card in addition to Amex.

Now it gets fun ... when Amex terminated us, they automatically put you on a TMS (terminated merchants) list, which is published to ALL credit card companies. So, Linkpoint picks that up and also terminates us (again, no notification). We realize that somethings up with Linkpoint on Thursday evening 6/12, when ALL orders start getting declined.

So, Friday most of the day I am on the phone with Linkpoint and Amex. Linkpoint says it's their policy to automatically terminate a merchant if they show up on the TMS list. They also say they'll reinstate if Amex takes us off the TMS list.

Now ... you're gonna love this ... I call Amex and finally get a nice woman who says something like "the computer did it automatically, let me take a look". I give here some details and a few minutes later she comes back and says something like "you shouldn't have been terminated, I will take you off the TMS list and can reinstate you with Amex if you'd like." Well, DUH, of course I'd like. So, she says "give me an hour or so and you will be reinstated". She also says that Linkpoint can confirm with them that they're taking us off the infamous TMS list.

So, now I am back on the phone with Linkpoint. And I tell the guy that we're now back in Amex's good graces and would he please reinstate us on Linkpoint for our Visa, Mastercard & Discover. He calls back several hours later and says that they will reinstate us, BUT just need to verify some orders. So he gives me a list of orders that are higher in value and asks me to fax copies to him, which I do. It's now about 4:30p on Friday.

Obviously, this guy's going home for the weekend, so we're unable to process any creidt cards over the weekend, which is usually a busy time for us. But, on your advice, I had put the website on manual, so at least the orders came in and we'll process the credit cards when we get reinstated at Linkpoint. We were able to log into our Amex account on Sunday evening, but can't automatically process Amex cards on our website, because they authorize through Linkpoint.

So, yesterday (Monday 6/16) I spoke with the Linkpoint guy and he says they're checking out the orders and will reinstate as soon as that's completed and they verify we're off the TMS list. Linkpoint does NOT seem to be in any big hurry to help their merchants (at least from our perspective).

That's where we are right now. Still accumulating orders that will need to be manually processed once we're reinstated with Linkpoint. I am calling this guy pretty regularly so that he knows I won't go away. I am hoping that we'll get reinstated today, but he makes no promises.

LESSONS LEARNED:
1. Pay very close attention to the orders coming in and, if you suspect fraud, confirm with the credit card company and credit the cardholder immediately. We were told by both Amex and Linkpoint that we had done the right thing by acting immediately in reporting these transactions and quickly processing the credits.
2. You will NOT be notified in a timely manner by either Amex or Linkpoint if they decide to suspend or terminate you. Orders will just start being declined.
3. You cannot prevent the bad guys from attempting fraud with stolen credit cards on your website. And some of the transactions will be approved. If they are approved, it counts against you even though you didn't do anything wrong.
4. In the near term, we are going to continue to process credit cards manually via the Linkpoint merchant portal, even after we're reinstated and could do automatic authorization, so that we will not get a fraud transaction that is automatically authorized. This has been too painful a process.

I will keep you posted on the outcome -- KOB.

I talked to Dale Spenrath, our Linkpoint provider. He is working with Kevin trying to see what he can do to help Kevin. Dale is not Kevin's Linkpoint agent however he is happy to pull any strings he can for all of our sake.

I'm waiting to hear from Dale to see if he was able to help. The main feeling is that the "First Data" computer is not going to change it's mind :).

In the old days everyone had some type of "banker" on the other end. Now it's just computers -- so we are at the mercy of the bits and bytes of a machine.

One important point I would add to Kevin's advice is to NEVER refund a fraudulent chargeback. Kevin had paid his 3% to charge the card and when he refunded it (thinking he was doing the "right thing") he was charged the 3% again -- Losing around $500.00 in fees that will never be refunded.

IMPORTANT : USPS Freaked out -- FYI

Today we received a few complaints that customers using USPS (US Postal Service) could not check out.

The error the customer received was "No Shipping Options Available".

After investigation we found that the USPS shipping API (web based shipping rating service hosted by the US Post Office) was having technical problems.

As far as we see this issue has been resolved by the Post Office.

Please let us know if you see any other issues. We cannot do anything when this type of issue occurs because the error is on the side of the Post Office.

The good news is -- this is a rare event. Let's hope the USPS keeps up and running in the future.

How secure is your password? Your role in security!

Are you one of those people that have a hard time remembering your password?

Do you....

Always use the same password so you don't forget it?

Use a password that is easy to guess like birthdates, children names, spouse names, or pets?

Think because you add a number 1 after the password it becomes safer?

Think again... You would be surprised how easy it is to guess your password.

If you are serious about the security of your web site and e-mail.... Make sure your password is difficult to guess.

For instance....

(I know many of you will resist a totally random password with upper case, lower case, and numerical digits because it's very hard to remember so here are some tips that are more reasonable)

Use a random word in a document or book, then type it backwards or add random numbers to the word.

If you insist on using a name -- use names of people that are NOT close to you. People that you met only once but can remember.

Use punctuation in your password

Use different passwords for different types of logins. Use harder passwords for your banking, etc. (some banks enforce harder passwords and changing it often)

Change your password once per month

Ideally you should use a random password generator like this http://www.pctools.com/guides/password/ to generate a properly mixed and random password.

Hope this friendly reminder helps keep your important data secure!

Hi. I just had a conversation with Jose Medina at APC Security (www.awarenessprotectiveconsultants.net ).

We just did some work for him and he said -- "Can you just charge the card you have on file?"

When I replied "We don't keep your credit card on file" -- he very quickly said "Then how do you charge my card every month?".

That's an excellent question. How do we charge your card without keeping your sensitive credit card info on file?

We take security very seriously. When we start a recurring transaction with our gateway (we use Linkpoint) -- we process the transaction and once we see it was approved, we clear credit card information from our records. We can maybe pull up the first and last four digits for proof. Not your entire card number or security codes.

Once the recurring is created with Linkpoint the information is stored there. Credit card processing and security is their core business. They are insured for taking responsibility for your credit card information. So we let them do their job.

It would be like asking us to hold your money instead of a federally insured Bank. We would prefer you use the bank.

If someone (knock on wood) actually hacked into our very secure Website Forge system -- there is very little for a hacker to steal. They certainly won't be able to steal YOUR credit card info! And that should make you feel good.

I find that very few companies take this approach. Most will take the gamble with your private information. We just choose not to take that risk.

So next time you think about asking us to "Just use the card on file.. " remeber we don't keep your card on file for your own benefit!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Going Green? Going once. Going twice. Gone! Website Forge has gone green!

My first urge is to rant and rave about the ridiculous marketing scheme that Microsoft put together to force people to spend hundreds of dollars for the EV (Extended Validation) certificate. However I already did that in this article .

This posting is to inform you, our Website Forge customers, that we have bit the bullet and purchased the EV certificate. This means that your web sites will always report as completely safe (by Microsoft's standards anyway).

There is an important technical item that I must share with you. Of course when we installed the certificate we all opened the latest Internet Explorer 7 browser, slammed an item in a shopping cart and looked for the "GREEN BAR" that is supposed to be there. To our total dissatisfaction the green bar did not show up. After calling a few people we found that some browers wouldn't turn green.

Here is an article I found explaining that if you change ANY settings in your IE 7 -- the green bar will not glow. I have no idea why this is. I'll let everyone know as soon as we find out why.

If your browser doesn't "GO GREEN" read this article for the explanation. Please don't yell at us -- Its not our fault :)

Anyhow, please enjoy your updated web site security and maybe take advantage of Microsoft's marketing machine and advertise the upgraded security to your prospective customers.

Have a great Easter weekend!

I have had a few customers tell me they routinely hunt for declined orders and contact the customer to assist them with their purchase. I am told that a high percentage of those sales are recovered.

Because of this fact, it was suggested that we allow you to optionally receive declined order notifications just like you would receive an approved order.

This optional feature was added in the most recent upgrade. Check it out and see if it's something that may help you recover otherwise lost sales.

Because of this fact, it was suggested that we allow you to optionally receive declined order notifications just like you would receive an approved order.

This optional feature was added in the most recent upgrade. Check it out and see if it's something that may help you recover otherwise lost sales.

The "Going Green" rip off! How Website Forge customers save up to $2695.00 per year!

Hi. Whether you know about the new "Green" Extended Validation browsers or not you NEED to read this article. Microsoft has invented a way to scare your prospective customers away from your web site and Website Forge will make sure your site doesn't fall prey to the huge online giants!

I've been sitting here thinking of a good analogy to explain how the new EV (Extended Validation) concept Microsoft dreamed up is one of the biggest scams I have ever seen. Then I found an article with this perfect portrayal --

"EV SSL is nothing but a second condom. And as such it is being pitched as the solution to make internet users safer. Sure it's more expensive and it's harder to apply for. As of now, only incorporated entities can apply for the EV SSL. As a result, small businesses (sole proprietorships, partnerships, etc... ) are presented with yet another series of hurdles to jump over, only to be followed by a finish line made of expensive red tape.

The introduction and critical mass buy-in of the EV SSL will aid big businesses in edging out their small business competitors. Why? Because small businesses that choose not to incorporate, can't get the EV SSL. The integration of the EV SSL is meant for people to better trust the site their on. But what does it (the EV SSL) actually do? Well, other than turning the address bar green in IE 7, not much. Oh wait, it will attach the name of the incorporated entity to the address in URL bar. Well I'm sure we'll all feel much safer now. Big business gets the edge, my address bar turns green, and I feel safer. Whew, thanks for that." (Go to http://www.mattmurph.com/myblog/?blogid=152 for full article)

Now for the GOOD news. The GOOD news is Website Forge customers will not have to pay one extra penny to assure the millions of consumers brainwashed by Microsoft that your web site is absolutely safe.

Just about any other e-commerce solution would require you purchase a $2650.00 EV SSL certificate and renew it every year!

Since Website Forge provides the SSL certificate as part of your service -- your site will be automatically upgraded soon. Free of charge.

When people are considering working with Website Forge -- we always stress how many new features and cost saving services we provide. I am positive that you will find MANY small online retailers who use "alternate" web site solutions wont be able to afford this new EV certificate. Ultimately they will have to close their online stores. I also predict that you will see some type of backlash or lawsuit over this fabricated scare tactic.

Hi. After discussing this for the millionth time (note the sarcasm) -- I thought I'd drop a line about security.

Any e-commerce site should be have an SSL security certificate provided by a company like Verisign, Thawte, or another reputable company. However that does not make your site 100% secure.

The only thing that SSL certificate does is make sure that when you submit a form online that the information is encrypted. This means if someone is somehow monitoring or "sniffing" your internet activity -- the information should not make sense. It's "scrambled".

Without boring you with technical facts the only real threat of "sniffing" your traffic is INSIDE your network. Meaning your internal network. Like another user in your local coffee shop trying to steal your passwords while they drink coffee in plain view of you. Once your information hits the actual superhighway, it's nearly impossible to grab or steal this information because it's like finding a needle in a haystack. Most people are at their home or office and this isn't a huge risk.

Some of the more realistic risks are things that have nothing to do with the SSL certificate. In fact the most exploited security holes are due to poor programming. That's why you see so many differences in the cost of programming. It's one thing to write a program or web application. It's a completely different thing to write an application with security in mind.

Something as simple as a poorly written web form can allow a hacker to send mass mail anonymously, attack other web sites, or worse -- completely take over your web server(s).

Open source products are constantly fighting this threat because their source code is available for anyone to view. So a hacker can take their time to figure out the best way to attack anyone using this software. Many people are being pushed into an open source e-commerce product called "Zen Cart" because it's "FREE" and it reduced the cost of their site. However, what do you do about security? An SSL certificate? Not even a firewall will keep someone from taking advantage of a software hole.

Here at Website Forge we handle security from several approaches.....

First we have a hardware firewall on the network. There are some active countermeasures built into this hardware firewall. Next we have software firewalls configured on the linux operating systems.

Then our cluster software has an application that will actively monitor scripts that attempt to do things they were not designed to do.

Our coding is first class -- designed from the ground up to resist the most common types of attacks. Each web site is securely isolated from each other so that any malicious activity on one site cannot harm another site.

To go a step further, each time we do detect a hacking attempt, we modify our own intrusion detection software to identify that type of attack and take countermeasures. Our intrusion detection software and configurations are also proprietary.

And finally the Website Forge system is not "open source" so you don't need to worry about every hacker having a roadmap on how to ruin your day.

Now let's discuss what we are actually protecting. What ARE you worried about? Hacks generally result in two things:

1. Your web site may be defaced.

2. Sensitive data like credit cards may be stolen.

So what do you do? Well, the vast majority of e-commerce systems store credit card information on the web server. So that is always a risk. Defacement really just ticks people off but does not cause a great deal of harm if caught quickly.

With a Website Forge web site we handle these issues specifically. First, we do not by default store ANY credit card information on the servers. Once the transaction is complete the credit card information is cleared and only your credit card merchant provider stores that information. Second, we do backups every 4 hours. So any defacement can be handled very quickly.

There are a few other security measures we take -- however, I won't list them because of their technical nature.

Oh yeah! and one last thing. Anyone that claims that your web site is 100% secure just because it's running on a Linux operating system is simply not telling you the truth. Linux is very secure. However for the very same reasons I explain above -- your site can be just as vulnerable as a windows hosted web site.

I hope this clears up some misconception about Security.
